WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The United States would like to see politicians and the general public in South Korea make concerted effort to ensure "a stable path forward" for the country that is still in the midst of political chaos, a national security spokesperson said Friday.

"We look to the ROK government, the National Assembly, and, of course, the Korean people to work together toward a stable path forward," National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communication John Kirby said as he gaggled with members of the press. He was referring to South Korea by the abbreviation of the country's formal name, the Republic of Korea.

Kirby's remarks came as judicial authorities in South Korea suspended the execution of an arrest warrant for the country's impeached president, Yoon Suk-yeol, after an hourslong standoff at Yoon's residence during which the impeached leader defied the attempt by investigators of the country's anti-corruption agency to detain him.

"It was judged that it was virtually impossible to execute the arrest warrant due to the ongoing stand-off," South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials said in a statement.

Kirby alluded to and expressed the U.S. government's appreciation for the pledge made by South Korea's current acting president, Choi Sang-mok, to focus on "maintaining national stability."

Kirby said that U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is "committed to working closely with the ROK government, including the acting president, to advance mutual interest in our shared values," and that the administration would "also expect the ROK government to proceed in adherence with the processes set forth in their constitution."

"We're going to maintain open lines of communication at all levels with the ROK government," he added. ■
